Halena (Hal) is a young lady from New Brunswick, who was diagnosed 3 years ago at the age of 7 with Friedreich's Ataxia after symptoms developed as a toddler. As her condition has progressed, she has become dependent on a wheelchair.
unfortunately, her chair will not fit in the hallway or through the doors of her home. Hal's Mom has carried her from her bedroom to the washroom to the kitchen to the livingroom... But as Hal [now in fifth grade] grows, that has become increasingly challenging and will only get harder until it becomes impossible, and let's be honest; this young lady fights this condition every second of every day out in the world, and she deserves as much independence and normalcy as possible in her own home.
Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA) is a rare, inherited neurological disorder that progressively affects coordination, balance, muscle strength, and sensation.
It is caused by changes in the FXN gene, which reduce the production of a protein called frataxin and can lead to damage in nerve and muscle cells.
Symptoms often begin in childhood or adolescence and may include difficulty walking, slurred speech, fatigue, and muscle weakness.
FA can also affect the heart and, in some people, blood sugar regulation. Although there is currently no cure, treatments and supportive therapies can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
